Minsk government authorizes march in Minsk on April 2 on occasion of Belarusian-Russian Unity Day

The Minsk City Executive Committee has authorized a march in Minsk on April 2 on the occasion of Belarusian-Russian Unity Day, former opposition lawmaker Valery Fralow told BelaPAN.

According to Mr. Fralow, who is one of the organizers of the march, he was notified of the city government’s permission by phone on Friday evening.

“We have been allowed to gather on the square in front of the National Academy of Sciences at 6 p.m. and march along Surhanava Street to Bangalore Square where a concert will be staged.” Mr. Fralow said. “There will be singing, dancing, games and entertainment there.”

About 10 people took part in a similar demonstration on Bangalore Square last year. Mr. Fralow predicted that up to 250 people would turn up this time.

On April 2, 1996, Alyaksandr Lukashenka and Boris Yeltsin, Russia's first president, signed an agreement on the formation of a Belarusian-Russian community. After a year, on April 2, 1997, the two leaders signed an accord that transformed the community into a union. On December 8, 1999, Messrs. Lukashenka and Yeltsin signed the Treaty on the Formation of the Belarusian-Russian Union State.
