Workers are using sticks to remove crow and rook nests from the tops of trees in the park in front of the Presidential Administration’s building as authorities struggle to prevent already speckled sidewalks from being further stained by bird droppings.
An estimated 50,000 birds of the crow family inhabit Minsk at present and a large-scale effort has been underway for years to reduce their population. Authorities used traps and firearms to kill the birds and sounds to scare them off, but the measures have proved ineffective.
There are plans to use birds of prey to rid the center of the city from crows, rooks and jackdaws.
However, the most efficient and humane method to keep the area free of bird flocks is to keep garbage containers closed.
