Green paint splashed onto Lenin statue in Navahrudak, two opposition activists arrested
Green paint was splashed onto the Lenin statue in Navahrudak, Hrodna region, on the night between November 6 and 7.
The attack was timed to coincide with the 92nd anniversary of the October Revolution that is officially observed in Belarus on November 7.
Two local members of an unregistered opposition party called Belarusian Christian Democracy (BCD) have been arrested in the city over the attack.
“Darya Bakhur and Yury Kazak were grabbed on the sole pretext that they had green paint and gloves,” BCD leader Pavel Sevyarynets told BelaPAN.
A young woman has been apprehended with the two, according to Mr. Sevyarynets.
She had a spray can with red paint on her. The woman was allowed to go after having her passport data put down.
Mr. Sevyarynets said that the two BCD members had been held at the local police station for three hours. The police brought administrative charges against the pair and freed them, he said.
