KGB uncovered three foreign spies this year, spokesman says

The Military Counterintelligence Directorate of the Committee for State Security (KGB) uncovered the activities of three foreign spies earlier this year, Pavel Traulka, spokesman for the directorate, told BelaPAN.

He said that the people had spied for neighboring countries but did not elaborate.

The KGB also foiled 15 attempts by foreign intelligence services to recruit spies from among Belarusians and exposed 14 people involved in spying against Belarus, Mr. Traulka said, declining to say in what country the suspected spies were staying.

The spokesman said that the counterintelligence directorate had prevented more than $16 million worth of damage to the country earlier this year.

The directorate's staff also seized 32 firearms, some 8,000 rounds of ammunition and 27,500 objects containing explosives from people in cooperation with military units and law enforcement agencies, according to Mr. Traulka.
