Minsk welcomes New Year with spectacular firework show
Thousands of people gathered at the Hero City Minsk obelisk at the center of the Belarusian capital city after midnight on January 1 to watch New Year’s fireworks.
The government-sponsored fireworks show began at 1:30 a.m. and lasted for 20 minutes.
Another major New Year’s celebration took place near the National Library. To get in, people had to go through police metal detectors. Drunken people and those having beer and other drinks in opaque containers were barred.
