The Polish Sejm on February 17 adopted a resolution condemning the Belarusian authorities’ policy regarding the Polish national minority, BelaPAN said.
The Polish government has lately advocated rapprochement with Minsk, but since the Belarusian authorities have infringed on the rights of the Polish community, the Polish government should now prioritize support of civil society in Belarus, the resolution said, according to Poland’s news agency PAP.
“The level of Poland’s and the European Union’s relations with the Belarusian authorities should directly depend on the level of respect for civil rights in Belarus,” said the resolution, which was adopted by acclamation.
The Sejm recommended considering the possibility of returning to a policy of sanctions regarding Belarus.
Sejm Speaker Bronislaw Komorowski reportedly said that Andzelika Borys, leader of the Union of Poles in Belarus, unrecognized by the Belarusian authorities, might visit Poland the following week.
