Construction of mosque in Minsk delayed by funding shortage

The construction of a mosque in Minsk has been delayed by a funding shortage, Mikhail Rybakow, spokesman for the office of the government's commissioner on religious and ethnic affairs, told reporters in the Belarusian capital on Tuesday, as quoted by BelaPAN.

The construction of the mosque kicked off in 2004 but was suspended two years later, after the Muslim World League stopped financing the project, estimated at more than $2 million at that time. The construction of the prayer house resumed in 2008. The design of the yet-to-be-built mosque is similar to a Muslim house of worship that appeared in downtown Minsk in 1902.
