First large-scale thyroid screening conducted in Belarus under EU/UNDP project

The first large-scale thyroid screening has been conducted in Belarus as part of a joint project of the European Union and the United Nations Development Program, with the obtained data to serve as a scientific platform for an international thyroid center scheduled to open in the country this year, BelaPAN reports.

Between March 29 and April 2, more than 600 people, including 150 children, were examined in Mazyr in the Chernobyl-hit Homyel region under the project, titled “Combat the Negative Effects of the Chernobyl Disaster in Belarus.” Preliminary results of the medical screening show that people living in the contaminated areas need regular routine medical checks by qualified professionals..
