Restoration of medieval castle in Navahrudak projected to take five years, official says

he restoration of the 11th-century castle in Navahrudak, Hrodna region, is projected to be completed within five years, Ihar Charnyawski, head of the culture ministry’s heritage protection department, told reporters in Minsk on April 15, as quoted by BelaPAN.

Only ruins of what is viewed by historians as the cradle of the Grand Duchy of Litva have survived in the western Belarusian city. Mr. Charnyawski said that 70 million to 100 million rubels is needed for the planning and design work alone.

Some 70 million rubels (around $23,500) has been gathered, with part of the amount provided by the government and the rest collected through a special lottery and donations, according to him.
