US-based Freedom House ranked Belarus among the world’s worst human rights abusers in its 13th annual report released on June 4, BelaPAN reports.
The non-governmental organization listed 17 countries and three territories with "extremely oppressive environments, with minimal basic rights and persistent human rights violations."
The report judges nine of the countries to have the worst human rights conditions. Burma, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Libya, North Korea, Somalia, Sudan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Tibet received the lowest possible score of seven, based on a one to seven scale, with one representing the most free and seven representing the least free, on both political rights and civil liberties.
Runners-up are Belarus, Chad, China, Cuba, Guinea, Laos, Saudi Arabia and Syria. Their score is seven in political rights and six in the civil liberties category.
