The organizing committee for festivities marking 20 years since the adoption of the State Sovereignty Declaration on July 27, 1990 was held at the Minsk office of Belarusian Christian Democracy (BCD) on Monday, BelaPAN reports.
Apart from BCD, the events are also being organized by a youth opposition group called Malady Front, the Right Alliance and the Razam organization.
BCD Secretary Dzyanis Sadowski said that a round-table conference attended by members of the 12th Supreme Soviet, which adopted the declaration, would take place in Minsk on July 24.
Prominent opposition activist Vyachaslaw Siwchyk called for paying tribute to "the people who are no longer alive but who played a big role in the declaration adoption."
"We should at least visit the graves of the deputies buried in Minsk, for instance that of Henadz Karpenka," Mr. Siwchyk said, adding that flowers also should be laid at monuments to prominent Belarusian writers and poets.
According to scientist Ivan Nikitchanka, it is this date, July 27, that should be observed as Independence Day.
