US state secretary presents International Women of Courage Award to Anastasiya Palazhanka
Prominent Belarusian opposition activist Anastasiya (Nasta) Palazhanka was presented in absentia with International Women of Courage Award in a ceremony in Washington on March 8, which was hosted by US State Secretary Hillary Clinton and First Lady Michelle Obama.
Since 2007, the award has been presented every year to 10 women from around the globe who have showed exceptional courage and leadership.
"Two of our honorees, Nasta Palazhanka from Belarus and [Cuban blogger] Yoani Sanchez from Cuba, could not be here because their governments would not allow them to travel here," Ms. Clinton said. "But we are with them in spirit and we salute them for everything they are doing on behalf of their countries and their people."
"Nasta Palazhanka of Belarus – she has been living through such a difficult time," Ms. Clinton said. "A country right in Europe that is still oppressing its people, rigging elections, jailing political opponents in the most brutal and oppressive ways, is an intimidating force. But, she has stood up and spoken out. So for her resolute commitment to promoting civil society and youth political activism, and braving – bravely helping to chart a peaceful path toward democratic society, we applaud her."
The other awardees are Kyrgyz President Roza Otunbayeva, Maria Bashir prosecutor general of Afghanistan's province of Herat, Cameroonian journalist Henriette Ekwe Ebongo, Chinese lawyer Jianmei Guo, Hungarian MP Agnes Osztolykan, Jordanian human rights defender Eva Abu Halaweh, Mexican Deputy Attorney General Marisela Morales Ibanez, and Pakistani women's rights activist Ghulam Sughra.
The 20-year-old Palazhanka, deputy chairperson of an opposition youth group called Malady Front, is one of the dozens of people charged in a so-called riot case that was opened following the December 19 post-election protest in Minsk. She was released from the KGB's detention center on February 17 on her own recognizance. //BelaPAN
