Weightlifting champion Syarhey Lahun dies in car crash
Belarusian weightlifting champion Syarhey Lahun was killed on Friday morning when his car left the road and crashed into a tree in Navapolatsk, Vitsyebsk region.
The accident occurred at 6:20 a.m. after the 22-year-old Lahun lost control of his Peugeot-206 Convertible at a curve in the road, said a spokesperson for the interior ministry's traffic police department.
Mr. Lahun died at the scene and his passenger, weightlifter Yawhen Zharnasek, 23, suffered a hipbone injury and a closed head injury and was hospitalized.
Mr. Lahun competed in the 85kg class at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and won the gold medal in the clean and jerk and the bronze medal in the overall total at the World Weightlifting Championships in Turkey in September 2010. He won world and European titles as a junior athlete.
Mr. Zharnasek finished fourth in the 105-plus kg category at the 2011 European Weightlifting Championships 2011, which was held in Kazan, Russia, between April 11 and April 17. //BelaPAN
