KGB spokesman denies maltreatment of Uladzislaw Kavalyow in detention center
The Committee for State Security (KGB)’s spokesman has denied that Uladzislaw Kavalyow, who was sentenced together with his friend Dzmitry Kanavalaw to death in the subway bombing trial on November 30, is maltreated in the KGB detention center.
When reached for comment by BelaPAN on Thursday, KGB spokesman Alyaksandr Antanovich said that Mr. Kavalyow’s detention conditions were in line with relevant regulations. As for his recent meetings with the family, their duration was also in conformity with the law, he said.
Earlier in the day, Ms. Kavalyow’s mother, Lyubow, filed complaints with the KGB detention center, the Supreme Court and the Prosecutor General’s Office over what she said short meetings that she and her daughter had been allowed with the young man following the trial. The mother was allowed to talk to the son only for 30 minutes, while her daughter was allowed only a 10-minute-long meeting with her brother.
Ms. Kavalyow also expressed fears that her son was held in a one-man cell handcuffed to the bunk. There were fresh marks from handcuffs on his wrists, she told BelaPAN, referring to their meeting on December 2. “I am also sure that he has no access to fresh air,” she said.
