Wife files fresh appeal with Prosecutor General`s Office over prison term against Syarhey Kavalenka

The wife of Syarhey Kavelenka has filed a fresh appeal with the Prosecutor General’s Office, asking it to replace her husband’s prison term with a non-custodial sentence.

Alena Kavalenka submitted the appeal after meeting with her husband at Detention Center No. 1 in Minsk on Monday.

In late February, the 37-year-old Kavalenka was transferred from a detention center in Vitsyebsk to the prison hospital run by Detention Center No. 1 on Valadarskaha Street.

“Syarhey looks feebler. His eyes have sunk in, he has skin folds and his movements are slow,” said Alena. “He looks much worse than at his meeting with his brother and mother last week. But he is set to continue the strike. He would not pay heed to my arguments against it. He would not even talk about this. He believes that the strike is the only way to get the prison term replaced or the conviction quashed.”

Mr. Kavalenka now weighs 51 kilograms, having lost 32 kilograms since going on the hunger strike, the woman said. “His body temperature is low, 35.2 degrees Celsius. His blood pressure is 90/60. But they refuse to transfer him to a civilian hospital.”

Previously, the wife filed two appeals with the Prosecutor General’s Office over the imprisonment of Mr. Kavalenka. “To the first two, it replied that they had been redirected to the Partyzanski District Court in Vitsyebsk. I also filed a similar request with the interior ministry’s Corrections Department, but it has not yet replied to it.”

In May 2010, the member of the Conservative Christian Party was sentenced to a suspended three-year prison sentence after he put a white-red-white flag on top of Vitsyebsk`s tallest Christmas tree in early January 2010.

On December 19, 2011, Kavalenka was arrested at home on a charge of violating probation rules four times and placed in a detention center. He has been on hunger strike and force-fed since then.

On February 24, a district judge in Vitsyebsk sentenced him to two years and one month in a low security correctional institution on a charge of violating probation rules.

Four days later, Mr. Kavalenka was transferred from the Vitsyebsk jail to the prison hospital in Minsk.
