Snowstorm paralyzes Minsk

A massive snowstorm that hit Belarus on Friday afternoon brought traffic inside and around Minsk to a standstill and put a severe strain on its subway system as people struggled to return home after work.

Hundreds of vehicles stood still on Minsk`s main thoroughfare, Independence Avenue, and numerous traffic accidents on the Minsk-Mahilyow highway forced the closure of Partyzanski Avenue from the Mahilyowskaya subway station all the way to Vaneyeva Square.
Drivers leaving or entering Minsk through the northeastern neighborhood of Urucha were trapped as snowplows battled to clear the snow from the highway connecting the capital city and Minsk National Airport.

A 20-kilometer section of the Minsk-Moscow highway was shut to traffic, and drivers traveling to Minsk were forced to take long detours.

The worst of the storm hit Minsk just at rush hour, slowing buses, trackless trolleys and streetcars to a near halt. Instead of waiting at bus stops, thousands of people either walked home or flocked to subway stations to take a ride on overcrowded trains. The busy Kastrychnitskaya station at the center of Minsk was closed for 20 minutes at the height of the rush hour, and the interval between trains was reduced to less than a minute. //BelaPAN
