Leader of Belarusian Popular Front warns of Russia's possible military intervention in Belarus

Russia may invade Belarus in the future to quell a possible uprising or even annex some part of Belarus’ territory, Alyaksey Yanukevich, leader of the Belarusian Popular Front (BPF), warned at a meeting of the opposition party’s Soym (Council) in Minsk on March 15.

"We see that all international agreements that secured peace and stability and countries' co-existence in the region are no longer working," he said. "Russia has unilaterally violated all these agreements and shown that the only thing that it recognizes is strength. And Russia is ready to use actively this strength against any neighboring country."

"Russia may repeat all Ukrainian events in Belarus. I think we are well aware of that and so is Alyaksandr Lukashenka whose policies in the past 20 years have undermined Belarus' capability to defend its national interests, undermined Belarus' independence in Russia's favor. Today he has found himself in this trap and has led all of Belarus there."

Mr. Yanukevich called for pulling the plug on Russian TV channels in Belarus. "We are not against Russians, but we don't want this war and ethnic hatred propaganda conducted by Russian TV channels to be available in Belarus. That contravenes Belarusian laws and our national interests," he said. //BelaPAN
