USA eavesdropped on Lukashenka, report says
Alyaksandr Lukashenka was among politicians who were targeted by the US National Security Agency’s spying program, said Germany’s magazine Spiegel with reference to evidence passed by former Central Intelligence Agency analyst Edward Snowden.
The United States reportedly eavesdropped on the phones of a total of 122 politicians. Apart from Mr. Lukashenka, the list includes German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Syrian President Bashar Assad and former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, according to the report.
The Wall Street Journal earlier reported that the US National Security Agency had eavesdropped on the phone conversations of some 35 heads of state and government for more than five years.
A scandal erupted last year after Mr. Snowden leaked to the media details of extensive Internet and phone surveillance by American intelligence. Mr. Snowden was granted temporary asylum in Russia in August 2013. //BelaPAN
