Elderly Belarusian woman arrested by Egyptian border guards after fleeing Gaza violence
A 68-year-old Belarusian woman fleeing violence in the Gaza Strip was arrested by Egyptian border guards on July 20 and is facing deportation from the country.
Hanna Lotysh was crossing the Israeli border into Egypt in the company of Russian and Ukrainian citizens when she was arrested for a border violation offense, Dzmitry Mironchyk, spokesman for the Belarusian foreign ministry, told BelaPAN.
"We are working now to ensure that it [the woman's deportation] happens as soon as possible," he said.
When reached by BelaPAN, the woman's daughter, Viyaleta, who is married to a Palestinian, explained that her mother had entered the Gaza Strip illegally from Egypt, through a smuggling tunnel under the border, in the past. The lack of Egypt's exit stamp in her passport may have caught Egyptian border guards' attention when Ms. Lotysh was leaving Gaza, said her daughter, who is staying in the Palestinian region.
"I have contacted Belarusian diplomats in Cairo and informed them of the situation. My mother suffers from a heart condition and high blood pressure," said Viyaleta.
