Driver runs over and kills nine-year-old girl in Lida, police find the body in his van

A nine-year-old girl was run over and killed by a cargo van in Lida, Hrodna region, on the afternoon of November 21.

The incident happened at an unsignaled crosswalk at about 2 p.m., when the girl was coming home from school, said the press office of the Investigative Committee of Belarus.

According to the press office, the incident was reported by a witness who stopped a passing police car and told the police that a Mercedes van had run over the girl and dragged her body for some distance after her clothes got caught in a part of the vehicle.

Police soon found the van and the girl's body inside it.

The van was discovered parked at the back door of a nearby grocery store, where the driver had been delivering food items.

According to the Hrodna regional traffic police department, the 43-year-old Minsk man only stopped after his vehicle had dragged the girl for about 100 meters. He loaded the body into the van and then drove to his destination, the grocery store.

Police are questioning the man to determine the reason for his strange and unprecedented conduct, said the department. // BelaPAN
