Number of people employed in small business sector increased slightly last year

The number of people employed in the small business sector increased by only 0.7 percent to 20.4 percent last year, according the press office of the economy ministry, BelaPAN reports.

The figure also accounts for sole entrepreneurs and their employees.

As of January 1, 2010, 77,402 micro and small business of all types of ownership had operated in Belarus, an increase of 13.8 percent compared with 2008. The number of sole entrepreneurs registered with tax authorities reportedly rose by 1.9 percent to 219,605.

Micro and small business accounted for 11.4 percent of the country’s GDP last year, which was 2.1 percent more than in 2008. Their share increased from 8.4 to 9.1 percent in industrial output, from 19.9 to 29.5 percent in retail turnover and from 16.7 percent to 30.5 percent in the country’s foreign trade.
