Kazulin: People have right to take to streets to protest ballot-rigging

People have the right to take to the streets to protest ballot-rigging, former presidential candidate Alyaksandr Kazulin told reporters in Minsk on August 20.

"The OSCE and the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly have repeatedly stated that it is normal and natural for people to protest election frauds on the streets," Dr. Kazulin said. "All governments react calmly to this, nowhere are street protests met with persecution, especially if they are peaceful and if people take to the streets to express their disagreement with election results and not to smash cars, windows, and storefronts."

If a government wants to ensure free and fair elections, it should react calmly to street protests and carefully check reports of violations, Dr. Kazulin said.

"If authorities unleash persecution against people taking to squares en masse in protest against ballot-rigging, it will suggest only one thing, namely: the results are flawed," he stressed.
