Official says that 240 of 294 nominees of opposition parties have been registered as candidates in local elections

A total of 240 of the 294 nominees of opposition political parties have been registered as candidates in the April 25 local elections, Mikalay Lazavik, secretary of the central election commission, told BelaPAN on Friday.

In particular, registration was granted to 99 of the 126 nominees of the “Spravedlivy Mir” (Just World) Belarusian Party of the Left, 77 of the 94 nominees of the United Civic Party, 33 of the 35 nominees of the Belarusian Popular Front, 29 of the 32 nominees of the Hramada Belarusian Social Democratic Party and both nominees of the Belarusian Social Democratic Hramada, Mr. Lazavik said.

The share of registration denials for nominees of political parties was "very low" compared with the previous, January 2007, local elections, he said.
