Belarusian Wikipedia reaches impressive milestone

The Belarusian Wikipedia site has published its 25,000th article, Vasil Kislyak, a representative of the Wikimedia Foundation in Belarus, told BelaPAN.

Useful information about Belarus’ history, culture, geography, wildlife, architecture and prominent figures is available at http://be.wikipedia.org, the Belarusian-language section of the free web-based encyclopedia that lets registered users submit and edit entries.

“It runs on special software called wiki, hence the name, and is meant to ensure collaborative work in the best way possible,” Mr. Kislyak said. “The free encyclopedia is a non-profit project and can be accessed by all people using the Internet.”

The Belarusian-language Wikipedia was launched in August 2006. It published the 10,000th entry in March 2008 and the 20,000th article in May 2010. Belarusian-language Wikipedia articles are written by 160 contributors on a voluntary basis, Mr. Kislyak said.
