Foreign Minister Martynaw invited to represent Belarus at Eastern Partnership Summit

Foreign Minister Syarhey Martynaw has been invited to represent Belarus at the Eastern Partnership Summit to be held in Warsaw, Poland, on September 29 and 30.

Syarhey Martynaw “The invitation is currently under consideration,” Andrey Savinykh, spokesman for the foreign ministry, told BelaPAN on Friday.

The Eastern Partnership, which was initiated by Poland and Sweden and inaugurated in the Czech capital of Prague in May 2009, is aimed at expanding and deepening political and trade ties between the European Union and six post-Soviet countries – Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine – on the basis of common values.

The Eastern Partnership is one of Poland’s priorities for its EU Council presidency, which began on July 1.

The upcoming meeting will provide an opportunity to take stock of the implementation of the Eastern Partnership. The summit will consist of an informal dinner and two plenary sessions.
