Belarus abandons idea of borrowing from Iran because of US sanctions
Owing to US sanctions, the National Bank of Belarus (NBB) has ceased talks with the Central Bank of Iran on a $400-million loan, NBB head Nadzeya Yermakova told reporters in Minsk on Friday.
“The Central Bank of Iran is under US sanctions and that is why we have no opportunity to settle any affairs with them,” Ms. Yermakova said.
Plans to borrow a total of $400 million from Iran were announced by Ms. Yermakova in early October last year. The “Iranian side” has given its general consent, Ms. Yermakova then said to the Council of the Republic (upper parliamentary house), adding that the terms would be discussed during her visit to Iran in October or November. //BelaPAN
