Only 10 percent of people nominated by opposition parties become members of precinct election commissions

As many as 61 representatives of four opposition political parties became members of precinct election commissions for the House of Representatives elections, according to the central election commission.

The parties had reportedly nominated of a total of 664 people, which means that only 10 percent of them were admitted to precinct commissions.

As Mikalay Lazavik, secretary of the central election commission, told reporters in Minsk on August 9, membership on precinct commissions was granted to 39 out of the 216 nominees of the “Spravedlivy Mir” (Just World) Belarusian Party of the Left, 12 out of the 158 nominees of the Belarusian Popular Front, five out of the 30 nominees of the Hramada Belarusian Social Democratic Party, and five out of the 240 nominees of the United Civic Party.

None of the 20 representatives nominated by the Belarusian Party of the Greens was admitted to precinct commissions.

According to Mr. Lazavik, as many as 635 out of the 845 nominees of the Communist Party of Belarus, 704 out of the 832 nominees of the Republican Party of Labor and Justice, 551 out of the 609 nominees of the Belarusian Social and Sports Party, 485 out of the 571 nominees of the Belarusian Agrarian Party, and 235 out of the 262 nominees of the Republican Party became members of precinct commissions.

Some leaders of political parties say that they nominated a lot of representatives to precinct commissions, but most of them were denied membership, but an analysis of the personalities of proposed people leads to sad conclusions, Mr. Lazavik said.

For instance, he said, out of the 18 people nominated by the United Civic Party to precinct commissions in Hrodzenski-Zanemanski Electoral District No 49, nine were unemployed persons and 10 of them were earlier punished under the Criminal or the Civil Offenses Code. //BelaPAN
