Opposition activist in Brest arrested, charged with organizing illegal migration

Opposition activist Vital Kowsh was arrested in Brest and charged with organizing illegal migration earlier this month.

Mr. Kowsh, who was involved in a number of political campaigns in the city in southwestern Belarus, was taken into custody on September 1. He is held in a pretrial detention center.

When reached by BelaPAN, the Brest regional office of the Investigative Committee said that investigators had gathered enough evidence proving Mr. Kowsh’s guilt.

Mr. Kowsh was arrested by police in October 2006 over an opposition street protest and was an observer in the 2010 presidential election, human rights defender Raman Kislyak told BelaPAN.
