Opposition activist arrested in Brest over flyers calling for election boycott

Opposition activist Dzmitry Shurkhay was arrested by police in Brest on Thursday evening after flyers calling for a boycott of the forthcoming House of Representatives elections were discovered in his bags.

Mr. Shurkhay, a coordinator of the Belarusian Christian Democracy (BCD) party in the Brest region, was picked up by police officers at the central bus terminal in Brest at 7:15 p.m., human rights defender Raman Kislyak told BelaPAN.

"Shurkhay probably got the bags from someone at the bus station," Mr. Kislyak said. "He was taken to the Leninski district police station. Police will question him and check whether the flyers in question carry data about the publisher and the printer."
