Foreign Minister Makey speaks at High-Level Meeting on Countering Nuclear Terrorism

Belarus devotes serious attention to efforts to fight nuclear terrorism, Foreign Minister Uladzimir Makey said at a High-Level Meeting on Countering Nuclear Terrorism in New York on September 28.

The meeting was held in the framework of the 67th Session of the UN General Assembly, according to the Belarusian foreign ministry's press office.

Belarus has signed all major treaties on the matter, Mr. Makey said at the meeting. He spoke about Belarus' efforts to fight terrorism at the regional and global level and called on the international community to work to achieve "true success" in fight against terrorism.

On September 28, Mr. Makey also chaired a meeting of the 22-nation Group of Friends United against Human Trafficking. Speaking at the meeting, the Belarusian minister stressed that "efficient fight against human trafficking requires a complex approach and a better coordination of actions by all partners."

A declaration outlining further joint steps by the Group and international organizations was adopted at the meeting.

On the same day, Mr. Makey held a meeting with Vuk Jeremic, president of the UN General Assembly's Session. The minister said that Minsk sought constructive cooperation with all partners regarding the implementation of the final document adopted at the UN Conference on Sustainable Development. Mr. Jeremic, for his part, expressed certainty that Belarus' priorities in vital spheres such as the development of sustainable development goals, cooperation in the sphere of energy and the transfer of energy technologies to countries in need would find broad support among other UN member states.

In addition, Mr. Makey had meetings with his counterparts representing Armenia, Nicaragua, Slovakia, Syria, Turkey, and Turkmenistan on September 28. //BelaPAN
