Lukashenka visits Armenian nuclear power plant
Alyaksandr Lukashenka visited Armenia’s sole nuclear power plant on May 14, inviting local experts to travel to Belarus to share their experience of operating and ensuring the safety of nuclear facilities.
The Belarusian leader, who arrived in Armenia on May 12, inspected the Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant some 30 kilometers off Yerevan.
“We need some 10 highly skilled experts who will teach and pass on their experience to Belarusians,” the government’s news agency BelTA quoted him as saying.
Referring to the launch of an Earth-imaging satellite and the ongoing construction of a nuclear power plant, Mr. Lukashenka said that Belarus was keen to develop high-technology sectors.
Gagik Markosyan, director general of the Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant, said that diversifying sources of electric power was key to ensuring a country’s energy security, and nuclear power engineering played an essential role in that. He expressed certainty that the Belarusian nuclear power plant would meet all modern standards and safety requirements.
On May 13, representatives of the Belarusian and Armenian governments signed an agreement on the exchange of information and cooperation in the sphere of nuclear safety and radiation protection. //BelaPAN
