Lukashenka touring Chernobyl-affected areas
Alyaksandr Lukashenka on April 24 embarked on an annual tour of radioactively contaminated areas in southern Belarus on the occasion of the 28th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear accident.
On Thursday, Mr. Lukashenka will fly over the northern parts of the Minsk and Mahilyow regions and familiarize himself with the progress of the spring sowing campaign, reported the Belarusian leader’s press office. On Friday, he will visit Chernobyl-affected areas in the Mahilyow region and conduct a government conference on the development of the region’s southern districts, the press office said, adding that a decision to hold the conference had been made two years earlier.
Several years ago, Mr. Lukashenka ordered the Mahilyow Regional Executive Committee to work together with the Council of Ministers to devise a development strategy for radioactively contaminated areas in the region “for the purpose of ensuring the normal functioning of the economy and raising people’s living standards,” the press office said. Officials are expected to report to Mr. Lukashenka on measures that have been taken to execute his orders. //BelaPAN
