Russian hockey fans set to march along Minsk streets on May 9 to mark Victory Day
Fans of Team Russia plan to stage a march in Minsk on May 9, the opening day of the 2014 World Ice Hockey Championship, on the occasion of Victory Day, the 69th anniversary of the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany in the 1941-45 Great Patriotic War, reported sports website tribuna.com.
Russian fans want to march along Minsk’s major streets and take part in events scheduled by the organizers of the world championship for May 9, the site said with reference to Eduard Latypov, president of the Russia Unites Fan Club.
“This year the opening day of the world championship falls on the 9th of May, when we traditionally hold events marking Victory Day,” Mr. Latypov said. “We plan to stage a march of Russian fans on May 9 and take part in events in Minsk. We are discussing this matter with the Russian embassy in Belarus and the Minsk City Executive Committee, which is in charge of preparations for the world championship.” //BelaPAN
