Opposition activist in Nyasvizh sentenced to heavy fine over anti-Russian protest
A judge of the Nyasvizh District Court on Tuesday imposed a fine of three million rubels ($300) on Natallya Bordak, an activist of Belarusian Christian Democracy (BCD) who staged an anti-Russian protest earlier this month.
Ms. Bordak said that no witnesses had been questioned and no evidence of her guilt had been produced during her trial, according to the BCD press office. The judge ignored the fact that Ms. Bordak had been held in police custody despite being a single mother of an underage boy.
The woman said that she would file an appeal against her sentence.
Ms. Bordak was arrested in Nyasvizh, Minsk region, on May 9 after she displayed a sign against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Ms. Bordak’s sign said, “No to Putin’s War against Ukraine!”
She spent three days in custody and was released in the courtroom on Monday. She was to stand trial that day, but the trial was postponed after she requested a lawyer. //BelaPAN
