Belarus receives 14 Syrian refugees

Three refugee families from Syria arrived at Minsk National Airport on Monday to stay in Belarus within the framework of a project funded by the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

The group, which consisted of six adults and eight children, were met at the airport by representatives of the interior ministry and the UNHCR Office in Minsk, reported the press office of the interior ministry.

 

Apartments and all necessary furniture have been purchased for the families, who will live in Homyel.

The UNHCR-funded project is being carried out by the ministry in partnership with other interested governmental agencies.

Belarus shares other countries’ “serious concern” about the deteriorating humanitarian situation in states bordering on Syria and urges relief organizations and countries to continue coordinating their efforts to provide international aid to Syrian refugees, the press office said.

According to the press office, citizen of Syria were the largest group of refugees who moved to Belarus in 2013. Belarus received 63 Syrian refugees that year and 95 refugees in 2014.
