Fewer people support Belarusian-Russian Union State project, government sociologist says

The share of citizens who are in favor of developing the Belarusian-Russian Union State project has decreased in recent years, Ihar Katlyarow, director of the Sociology Institute of the National Academy of Sciences, said during a video news conference on August 19.

According to the Institute's data, 52 percent of Belarusians believe that Belarus and Russia should be entirely independent, and that their relations should be based solely on international agreements, Dr. Katlyarow said.

Forty percent believe that the two countries should be actively developing their Union State, down from 80 percent a decade ago, he said.

Slightly more than two percent agree that Belarus should become a province of the Russian Federation, he noted. //BelaPAN
