New US charge d'affaires pays tribute to American woman who died while on UN mission to Minsk in 1946

Ethan Goldrich, the United States' new charge d'affaires in Belarus, laid flowers at the grave of Ruth Waller at Minsk's Military Cemetery on Monday to pay tribute to the American woman who died while on a United Nations mission to the city in 1946, BelaPAN said.

Ruth Waller arrived in Minsk earlier that year on assignment by the UN Relief and Reconstruction Agency (UNRRA), which was one of the first agencies of the new United Nations charged with caring for millions of refugees displaced by World War II.

Ms. Waller arranged deliveries of clothing, food and medical goods to the Soviet republic, helping save thousands of lives. She died of meningitis at the age of 24 in August 1946.
