Some 25,000 people sign petition for Uladzimir Nyaklyayew's nomination as delegate to All-Belarusian People's Assembly
Activists of the "Tell the Truth!" campaign have collected some 25,000 signatures to a petition calling for the nomination of leader Uladzimir Nyaklyayew as a delegate to the Fourth All-Belarusian People’s Assembly.
As Andrey Dzmitryyew, a coordinator of the campaign, told BelaPAN, the signatures have been gathered across the country. "People are eager to put signatures for Nyaklyayew's nomination as a delegate to the Assembly," he said.
The signature-collection campaign will run until August 29 and the signatures will be examined by "Tell the Truth!" experts afterward, the activist said.
When the government formally sets the Assembly's date, "Tell the Truth!" activists will collect more signatures to the petition in the district where Mr. Nyaklyayew resides and submit the petition to the event's organizing committee, Mr. Dzmitryyew said.
The Fourth All-Belarusian People's Assembly is expected to be the culmination of Alyaksandr Lukashenka's campaign in the run-up to a presidential election to be held in Belarus in late 2010 or early 2011.
The Third All-Belarusian People's Assembly was held two weeks before the 2006 presidential election. As many as 2,500 delegates attended that conference, with the six regions represented by 350 delegates each and the city of Minsk by 400 delegates.
