Russian leader congratulates Lukashenka on reelection

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has congratulated Alyaksandr Lukashenka on his reelection, the Belarusian leader’s press office said.

“I wish successes for you and peace and prosperity for the brotherly Belarusian people,” the press office quoted the message as saying.

On December 24, Mr. Lukashenka received congratulations on reelection from Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and Chinese President Hu Jintao.

He was earlier congratulated by the leaders of Armenia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, and Venezuela.

According to the final official results of the December 14-19 election, Mr. Lukashenka won 79.65 percent of the vote. Many domestic and international observers have described the election as deeply flawed.
