Associates post up signs in Minsk in support of imprisoned politician Dzmitry Bandarenka

Activists of an opposition group called European Belarus posted up dozens of signs in Minsk on Thursday, urging sympathizers to support imprisoned politician Dzmitry Bandarenka who underwent back surgery on July 26, BelaPAN said.

The press office of European Belarus said that activists would stage various events every day to draw the public’s attention to the woes of Mr. Bandarenka and other political prisoners.

European Belarus hopes for its coordinator’s speedy recovery and release, the press office said.

On April 27, a district judge in Minsk sentenced Mr. Bandarenka, a former campaign aide to presidential candidate Andrey Sannikaw, to two years in a low-security prison, finding him guilty of organizing disturbances and participating in them in connection with a post-election protest staged in Minsk on December 19, 2010.
