Convicted rights defender Byalyatski moved to jail in Zhodzina
Convicted human rights defender Ales Byalyatski was transferred on Friday to a detention center in Zhodzina, Minsk region, associate Valyantsin Stefanovich told BelaPAN.
Mr. Byalyatski's lawyer, Dzmitry Layewski, met with his 49-year-old client at Pretrial Detention Center No. 1 in Minsk on December 1. Mr. Byalyatski said at the meeting that he had been told to prepare for his transfer to the Zhodzina jail the following day.
Judge Syarhey Bandarenka of the Pershamayski District Court in Minsk on November 24 sentenced Mr. Byalyatski, the leader of a human rights organization called Vyasna (Spring) and vice president of the International Federation for Human Rights, to four and a half years in prison on a charge of large-scale tax evasion and made a confiscation order against him.
On November 29, the lawyer filed an appeal against the prison sentence with the Minsk City Court. The latter is to consider the appeal within a month. Mr. Byalyatski may not be moved to a correctional institution until the appeal is considered.
