Three Belarusians survive Italian cruise ship disaster
There were three citizens of Belarus on board the Costa Concordia when it sank and all of them are safe and not injured, a spokesperson for the Belarusian foreign ministry told BelaPAN.
The Belarusians, who lost all their belongings in the accident, have been put up in local hotels along with other survivors, the spokesperson said.
The Italian luxury cruise ship struck a reef and sank onto its side off of the small Italian island of Giglio on Friday night.
There were more than 4,200 people on board. After divers found two more bodies on Sunday, the dearth toll in the disaster increased to five people, with 15 people remaining unaccounted for.
Investigators believe that the ship was dangerously close to the shore. The captain of the liner, Francesco Schettino, is now in custody and may be charged with manslaughter and abandoning his ship.
