Belarus ranks second among post-Soviet countries in terms of inflation in January
Belarus ranked second among the post-Soviet countries in terms of consumer price growth in January 2012, according to a BelaPAN survey of the countries' official data.
In the first month of the year, consumer prices reportedly rose by 3.6 percent in Armenia, 1.9 percent in Belarus, 0.8 percent in Kyrgyzstan and Latvia, 0.7 percent in Estonia, 0.5 percent in Georgia and Russia, 0.4 percent in Tajikistan, 0.3 percent in Kazakhstan, Lithuania and Moldova, 0.2 percent in Ukraine, and 0.1 percent in Azerbaijan.
No data were available for Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, where consumer prices increased by 7.6 and 5.3 percent last year, respectively.
In January 2011, Belarus had the seventh highest increase in consumer prices among the post-Soviet countries with 1.4 percent, but the year’s inflation reached 108.7 percent, 12 to 54 times higher than in the other post-Soviet countries, whereas the government had projected an increase of 7.5 to 8.5 percent in 2011.
