Presidential Administration head accuses EU of openly supporting Lukashenka’s political opponents

The head of the Presidential Administration has accused the European Union of openly supporting political opponents of Alyaksandr Lukashenka and seeking to get hold of lucrative businesses in Belarus with their help.

In a statement broadcast by Belarus’ state TV channels on April 6, Uladzimir Makey referred to remarks made by EU Development Commissioner Andris Piebalgs at the European Parliament’s most recent session. In particular, the EU commissioner said that the 27-nation bloc was ready to “eat the Belarusian pie as soon as appropriate conditions are created,” meaning the opposition’s rise to power, Mr. Makey claimed.

The official said that “specific opposition leaders” were behind the European Union’s each restrictive measure as they called for sanctions to be introduced and reinforced against “specific enterprises, individuals and the country in general.”

Mr. Makey launched a scathing attack on opposition forces, which he described as unpatriotic and unpopular with the public. According to him, opposition leaders spend more time holding talks in Western cities than touring Belarus and meeting with ordinary voters.

The Presidential Administration head also referred to lawsuits filed by whom he described as “worker collectives” against opposition politicians over their calls for international sanctions against Belarus. He said that opposition politicians were alienating the public by their "ill-considered" actions. //BelaPAN
