Imprisoned opposition politician Mikalay Statkevich turns 56

Former presidential candidate Mikalay Statkevich, who is serving a six-year prison sentence, turned 56 on August 12.

As the opposition politician’s wife, Maryna Adamovich, told BelaPAN, Mr. Statkevich was visited by his lawyer on August 10. The following day the woman received a letter from the politician. “The best present for both him and me is probably that he has finally received a parcel from me,” she said.

Mr. Statkevich has been again assigned work in prison, according to the woman. “He is happy with that, he sees it as another opportunity to get out of a small cell and into a big one,” she said.

Ms. Adamovich said that her husband was in a cheerful mood. “He has not complained about prison conditions, apparently he has not experienced any particular problems, the atmosphere is quiet so far,” she said.
