Belarusian national hockey team to miss 2014 Olympics
The Belarusian national ice hockey team failed to qualify for the 2014 Sochi Olympics after a shock defeat at the hands of underdogs Slovenia in a four-squad qualifying tournament earlier this month.
Belarus were beaten 4-2 by Slovenia in the opening game of the tournament in Denmark on February 7. Although Belarus defeated Ukraine and Denmark afterward, the team finished only second in Group F. Slovenia went on to win the tournament and secure an Olympics slot.
The Belarusian national ice hockey team made their Olympics debut at the 1998 Nagano Games. The team finished fourth at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics after upsetting favorites Sweden in the quarterfinals. //BelaPAN
