Lukashenka says he oppose erecting monuments to him
Alyaksandr Lukashenka said Tuesday that he was opposed to the erection of monuments to him and other “figures.”
“I am strongly opposed to monuments to the first president of the country, although there have been a lot of proposals for this,” the Belarusian leader told reporters following a ceremony marking the start of the construction of what the government describes as a housing estate for research and art workers.
“I said, ‘Only after my death if there is anyone who has nothing else to do,'” he said. “I'm a fierce opponent of the erection of such monuments."
"This is our job, and you maintain me as the president and pay a salary to me,” Mr. Lukashenka said.
“A monument to a figure should be in people’s minds. It is this kind of monuments that should be created by figures,” he noted, pointing to the Museum of the History of the Great Patriotic War and Victory Park currently under construction in Minsk as examples of such monuments. //BelaPAN
