Opposition activist in Hrodna fined over flyers
A district judge in Hrodna on Tuesday imposed a fine of two million rubels ($231) on Syarhey Verameyenka, over flyers that advertised the "Wave of Solidarity" campaign in support of the political prisoners.
The judge of the Leninski District Court found the activist of Belarusian Christian Democracy (BCD) guilty of distributing a periodical lacking data about the publisher and the printer, according to the BCD press office.
Spearheaded by BCD, the "Wave of Solidarity" campaign consisted of daily events that took place alternately in large and medium-sized cities between February 13 and March 25.
Mr. Verameyenka was arrested by men in civilian clothes near the office of BCD in Hrodna on March 12 while he was carrying flyers that invited people to attend a “Wave of Solidarity” event, the press office said.
The plainclothesmen introduced themselves as officers of the Leninski district police station but refused to show their IDs.
They took Mr. Verameyenka to the police station, counted his flyers and then went to his home without any search warrant to seize more flyers, the press office said. //BelaPAN
