Investigative Committee probing another plastic surgery accident

 

The Minsk regional office of the Investigative Committee of Belarus investigating why Volha Sukora went into a coma following plastic surgery in the Minsk Regional Children’s Clinical Hospital in October 2012.

The probe was launched in response to a complaint that the hospital staff had failed to provide proper medical assistance to Ms. Sukora, Tatsyana Belanoh, spokesperson for the Minsk regional office of the Investigative Committee told BelaPAN.

The investigators currently question employees of the Minsk Regional Children’s Clinical Hospital and examine medical records, Ms. Belanoh said, adding that independent experts were involved in the inquiry.

Ms. Sukora, currently 33 years of age, underwent plastic surgery in the hospital in the village of Barawlyany near Minsk on October 10, 2012, to correct her bite and has been in a coma since then.

Her mother was a studio guest at a talk show broadcast by state television network ONT on Monday evening. The show focused on the death of 25-year-old Yuliya Kubarava during or shortly after reconstructive nose surgery at Ecomedservice, a large private clinic in downtown Minsk.

Alyaksandr Lukashenka directed on May 3 that the medical personnel and managers of Ecomedservice who are responsible for the death should be dismissed and punished severely.

The director and the chief engineer of the clinic were subsequently arrested and so were four members of the surgical team that had carried out the operation. The surgeon who had operated on Ms. Kubarava and the nurse who had assisted him were soon released. // BelaPAN
