Agreement on military-technical cooperation may be signed during Sri Lankan president’s visit to Belarus

An interstate agreement on military-technical cooperation may be signed as a result of the forthcoming visit of the president of Sri Lanka, Mahinda Rajapaksa, to Belarus, Udayanga Weeratunga, the Moscow-based Sri Lankan ambassador to the Russian Federation and Belarus who is a first cousin of the president, said in an interview with the Belarusian government’s news agency BelTA.

The Sri Lankan president is expected to stay in Belarus between August 25 and August 28.

According to BelTA, the ambassador noted that Sri Lanka was interested in the development of military-technical cooperation with Belarus. “Sri Lanka has much Soviet-made military equipment, including helicopters, tanks and armored personnel carriers,” Mr. Weeratunga said. “We will continue to purchase such equipment. I know your country has excellent plants where helicopters are repaired. This is what we need. That is why this is one of the promising areas of cooperation.” //BelaPAN
